Treasury Three-Year Note Yield Rises From Near Lowest in 2010 Before Sale Treasuries fell, pushing the yield on three-year notes up from almost the lowest level this year. Prices of U.S. Treasury securities gave up early gains to trade near flat, as demand for safe assets eased and upcoming new government debt supply weighed on the market. Bond prices rose when Fitch Ratings said the U.K. faces a “formidable” challenge in putting its public finances in order, fueling investor anxiety over the euro-zone’s sovereign debt problems. The U.S. bond market is bracing itself for this week’s $70 billion new Treasury notes and bonds supply. The Treasury will sell $36 billion in an auction of three-year notes at 1 p.m. EDT, followed by $21 billion of 10-year notes Wednesday and $13 billion in 30-year bonds Thursday.
Testy Tuesday: Gentle Ben vs. Reality: Behold the power of prayer! Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Monday he is hopeful the economy will gain traction and not fall back into a “double dip” recession. “My best guess is we will have a continued recovery, but it won’t feel terrific,” Bernanke said.

Bernanke Says Fed Likely to Increase Rates Before Full Employment in U.S. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said the U.S. recovery probably won’t quickly bring down the unemployment rate, which is likely to stay “high for a while.” Traders don’t expect the Fed to start raising rates until the first quarter of 2011, based on futures on the Chicago Board of Trade.

Fed’s Duke Says `Burdened’ U.S. Consumers May Be Slow to Return U.S. consumers, who acquired too much debt during the housing boom and then watched their wealth shrink, are likely to be reluctant to return to free-spending ways soon, Federal Reserve Governor Elizabeth Duke said.
